After hearing so many different prices flying around and so many inconsistencies, I decided to do my own detective work and called up NDC to find out the difference in prices between private and referral (by polyclinic). Thanks to the patient and exceptional service by the receptionist Rani. (spent more than 20mins on the phone and carefully explaining all the different procedures me, she should be promoted!)

This is what I found:

Treatment Private Referred
Consultation $71 - $94 $34
Extraction $54 - $86 $26 - $46
Wisdom tooth surgery $750 - $800 $350 - $450
Root Canal Treatment $400 - $800 $200 - $500
Crown $700 - $1,000 $500 - $800
Braces $4,500 $3,000
Dental Implant $4,500 per tooth You wish…
Veneer $700 per tooth If only…
Teeth Whitening $1000 Should it?

Coming to the last 3 items, dental implants and the 2 cosmetic treatments -Veneers & Teeth Whitening, are not covered by the subsidized rates so stop calling them and asking if it is!

If you’re thinking that the reason for the subsidy is due to “inexperienced dentist” treating you, you’re mistaken. Procedures like wisdom tooth surgery will be done by a specialist Oral Surgeon and Braces would be done by a specialist Orthodontist regardless if you’re paying Private or Subsidized rates.

Next we come to the waiting time for subsidized treatments. $3,000 for braces done by a specialist sounds like something that everyone would jump on right? Most definitely!

That why there is a waiting period of not 1 year, nor 2 years, but 3 years!

That’s enough time for you to finish your braces 1 and a half times over.. As for crown and bridge, the waiting period is 7 - 8 months.

Now we come to ethics, I asked her if I was earning $20,000 a month and went via the dental polyclinic route to get a referral letter to NDC, will I be “disapproved”? She told me that this subsidized rate is for every Singaporean regardless of income bracket. So if you can afford it and still want to take this route, by all means. But do understand that the government has put into place this system to help the lower income bracket families get proper and affordable healthcare.

So I leave that decision to you.
